Michele Adamson met some of the hottest artists from Spun records

Interview by Michele Adamson

A NEW WAVE OF SPUN ARTISTS ARE ABOUT TO OPEN THE FLOODGATES OF THEIR COLLECTIVE CREATIVE JUICES, SPILLING THEM OUT FROM THE SUMMER ONWARDS FROM THE INIMITABLE LAUNCH PAD OF BALEARIC BLISS, IBIZA FUCKEN ISLAND. I SLINKED OVER TO SPUN
CENTRAL AND FOUND POLI, BUSHMAN & SOUNDAHOLIX EXCHANGING WARES, JOKES AND SMOKES. OUTSIDE THE SUN BEATS DOWN WITH A HINT OF THE HEAT TO COME OVER THE SUMMER. THERE IS A SOUND OF CHILDREN PLAYING BY THE POOL. THE ATMOSPHERE IS THAT OF A FLUID, FUNKY FAMILY WITH PEOPLE COMING AND GOING, NOT SO MUCH HUMAN TRAFFIC AS A SPRING OF GOOD VIBES & FRESH INFORMATION CONSTANTLY BABBLING BY THE FRONT DOOR. WE\'RE JOINED BY ACE WHO MANAGES THE LABEL AND LAURENCE CHROMATOME WHO IS VISITING FROM THE US TO MAKE A VERSUS TRACK WITH SOUNDAHOLIX.

POLI- aka Austin Matkin, is about to release his first album ELECTRIC WONDERS.

MA: First albums can be emotional. What trials have you undergone to squeeze this one out Poli?

POLI: i put my mind to the test and learned a lot about projectile vomiting

MA: There seems to be quite a gathering of psyproducers on the island, putting out enough stylised music to justify a movement. Do you find there is a particular Ibiza sound, if so do you go after it or does it just happen?

POLI: it just happens because of the vibe on the island. it´s a great environment to make trance. and thats apart form the party side..even if there were no parties it would still rock here.

MA: What was the first psy cd you owned that you would like to remember?

POLI: Twisted - Hallucinogen

MA: What kind of music do you listen to for pleasure at home?

POLI: i like to keep up with all pop. i like to see what the big money makers are up to. Ace likes to serve fiends in his white T.

MA: Do you like scary movies?

POLI: yes - army of darkness because it the silliest thing i ve ever seen and i love silliness.

MA: What do you think of girl DJ´s?

POLI: I love em, preferably three at once

LAURENCE: Girl DJs at a party always helps. They bring their girl friends.

MA: Who or what inspires you to make music?

POLI: the touring of the planet. The ability to move around and blast and get people off at every stop...all over the place!

MA: Do you have any advice for beginners?

POLI: Just keep at it; don´t give up

MA: What do you look for in a party?

POLI: I look for a good dancefloor. Nice production is very important but for me sound is the most vital part.

MA: What´s the best smell in the world?

ACE- Money!

MA: When will ELECTRIC DREAMS be released?

POLI: It´s spreading out this summer from Ibiza on Spun Records.

MA : Mac or pc?

POLI: Mac.

MA: What time is love?

POLI: Now.

MA: So BUSHMAN your debut album UNHUMAN will be the first of the new generation to launch from Spun, can you tell me what kind of journey you have been on to complete it?

BUSHMAN: It´s been a battle between what you think is going to come out and what actually does come out.

MA: Who or what turned you onto Trance?

BM: : Hallucinogen & LSD. It was that track that attracted my...that blew my noggin.

MA: How about the Ibiza sound, do you subscribe to it?

BM:There is most definitely an Ibiza sound and it has had the same vibe well, for as long as i can remember trance music being here. There has always been that Ibiza sound. It just happens and i noticed that away from Ibiza it doesn\'t happen, making music in other places.

MA: Who or what inspires you to make music?

BM: Other music inspires me. For me music is hearing different kinds of music and new music and merging the feelings I get from other music into trance, capturing the vibe of new music.. I´m inspired by so much music. The channel for that is putting all that inspiration into my own music. I was listening to Tchaikovsky and then the Yeh Yeh Yeh´s the other day and it made me want to run into the studio.

MA: At what age were you inducted into the party scene?

BM: 0! i was inducted when i was a little baby. For trance fourteen. It started filtering in from Goa to Ibiza and then from England to Ibiza.

MA: What advice would you offer someone making their first album?

BM: If you start something finish it, even if you think it´s going to sound like shit because you never know what it will develop into before it\'s actually finished.

MA: What is the best smell in the world?

BM: Sausages - cooking sausages not 3000 dancing sausages. that´s the worst smell. Mmm it´s worth going back to England for.

MA: When will your album be coming out?

BM: It´s being released at the end of June by Spun Records.

MA: Mac or PC?

BM: Mac, I feel dirty when i use a PC.

MA : Do you like to read if so what?

BM: I subscribe to the New Scientist.

MA: i RTFM (read the fucking manual).

SOUNDAHOLIX is Celli Firmi (Earthling) and Riktam Matkin (GMS)

MA: What are you looking for in a party?

CELLI: A good dancefloor, good vibe, a little stall selling falafel and hummus for the morning.

RIKTAM: I´m looking for the power minger. The minger in the end..last minger standing. Aren´t we all?

MA: What music do you listen to at home?

RIKTAM: Anything goes. We listen to the song Anything Goes all the time.

CELLI: I listen to Chill Out or minimal, sometimes trance.
MA: Is there an Ibiza sound?

RIKTAM: Ibiza sound? For sure. I don´t really go for it but it just comes out of my ronson.

CELLI: Ditto

MA: How did you come up with the name SOUNDAHOLIX

CELLI: We were just sat down in the studio and Alexis said something about ´ Welcome to Soundaholix Anonymous, the meeting is now in session...´

RIKTAM: We are addicted to sound.

MA: What was your first psy cd?

CELLI: TIP yellow, Concept in Dance. Order Odonata and Trust in Trance. i bought them all at the same time.
MA: Did you wear any Space Tribe clothing?

CELLI: yeh my fractal underpants. i bust em out when the vibe gets really freaky. i like to dance to trance in my underpants.

MA: Do you play computer games?

CELLI: Not really no.

RIKTAM: FiFA all the way.

MA: When will the album be out?

CELLI: end of the summer on Spun.

MA: What can we look forward to hearing?

CELLI: Our music is good for everyone that\'s why it´s Qool. The album is psychedelic and dancy at the same time.

MA: Do you prefer daylight or synthesizers?

CELLI: definitely synthesizers!
