ABOUT S.O.M.A.
S.O.M.A. is one of the most innovative music festivals in Germany. S.O.M.A. has featured german and international acts like Gentleman, DJ Koze, Seeed, 2raumwohnung, Brothers Keepers or the Saian Supah Crew before they were the stars they are now. The festival was born out of the idea to create an event that crosses the borders of musical genres by a Cologne party collective in 1998. Since then the Summer Of Music & Arts festival has featured international legends of popculture, German topacts, world wide known DJs as well as newcomers who became popular very quickly after performing at the Summer Of Music & Arts festival.

Last year's Summer Of Music & Arts festival was the breakthrough with an attendance of over 15.000 guests. It proved that it was the right decision to move the festival location from the outskirts of the city right into the heart of Cologne. In 2004 on the official opening weekend of the new electronic music festival c/o pop we once again will celebrate a festival culture unique in Germany. Surrounded by illuminated trees and the sandy banks of the river Rhine our location - the Jugendpark - will be a melting pot of ravers, travellers, hippies, homeboys and lots more folk from near and far.

When the Summer Of Music & Arts festival started in 1998 the night program and dance culture was in the centre of interest both for the audience and the organisers. This has changed since then. Today the Summer Of Music & Arts festival has a daytime program that is just as attractive - featuring bands on the big main stage and performing artists in the Artist Garden. This year we have added two big night locations that will offer enough space for over 3,000 party enthusiasts who can dance to a world class DJ line up until early morning.

Altogether the Summer Of Music & Arts festival presents six different areas where inspired artists meet an open-minded and sometimes crazy audience. But maybe the individually most remembered moments will happen between the people who meet between the beaches of the Rhine, the vast festival area and the numerous stands. Surprises are on the agenda when the Summer Of Music & Arts festival celebrates the unity of differences.

Line-Up 2004

Friday the 6th of August we feature all the aspects and styles of electronic music. Headliner is The KLF - the legendary techno act from the beginnings of dance culture in the late eighties and early nineties. The singer Wanda Dee from New York City presents classic tracks that have left their mark on the sampling culture. She will ask you "What Time Is Love?" The "Chicks On Speed" will open on the main stage before the KLF will rock you. Club 1 will present the German electro-techhouse diva Miss Kittin and the "Chicken Lips" from the UK. Club 2 will be played by Peter Kruder & Sugar B. from Vienna (Austria) who present their definition of nujazz, downbeat and deephouse.

Saturday is the traditional day for hiphop, reggae and world-pop. The best hiphop crew of Germany - the Beginner - will headline the mainstage. Amparanoia and Cheb Balowski from the mestizo scene around Manu Chao from Barcelona will kick off the day with their fusion of a balkan-flamenco-ska-salsa-reggae sound. The dancehall-reggae night in club 1 will be rocked by Germany's hottest sound system: Sentinel from Stuttgart, supported by the local sound system Kingstone. The hiphop crew Nitty Gritty will host club 2 with support from: DJ Coolmann of Fünf Sterne Deluxe, DJ Haitian Star aka Torch, DJ Mad from the Beginners and Bantu from the Brothers-Keepers collective. The part of the audience who prefers a straighter beat can dance and chill at queerparty Bodycheck on the terrace.

On Sunday the music magazine Intro presents the band MIA from Berlin and Germany's smartest rockband Kante from Hamburg. Additionally we present the outdoor techno-party Pollerwiesen with the Playhouse-Allstars Ata, Heiko M.S.O., Roman Flügel (Alter Ego) from Frankfurt and the Pollerwiesen host Patrick Peiki. There will be an afterhour Pollerwiesen party featuring some of the world best DJ's in a club in the Jugendpark once the outdoor party is over. Last but not least disco-daddy Hans Nieswandt will spin his classics of dance culture on the outdoor terrace.

Artist Garden

The Summer Of Music & Arts wouldn't be complete without the Artist Garden. An open air stage on all three days of the festival will present comedy, streettheater, an open stage and juggle battles to name just a few things. On Sunday the Swiss artist Heinz will build a fifteen meter high wooden tower - a must see. On Saturday - after the bands have left the stage a big Circus Night Show with international performing artists from all over the world will showcase astonishing talents. The light artist optiX, Mr. flameOz with a spectacular fire show and the circus act Kontrapass will entertain you long into the night. A marching band, a kidsparade and lots of strange people will cross the location on all three days - you cannot miss them - they are everywhere. Like in the past years workshops offering everything from afrodance to drumming, yoga and capoeira welcome you to participate as often as you like.
