Umpf. Umpf. Zwitscher. Umpf.

Sony for the psx !
boom festival was PERFECT.
lots of strong, positive energy. our highs went up and down with the
beats - the dj's were sublime in their playing with our hyperactiveness.
ollie wisdom (my personal favorite after ubar tmar) told me he played
mostly new stuff (as a matter of fact i really wanted to dance to "spirit
and nothing" but he didnt play it). so 35 hours of driving (2 whole
days!) were more than worth it. compliments really to the organizers.
italy should organize a festival of such caliber because the goaheads
here are in millions, and we'd love it. by the way, who was the really
young dj who played? he was excellent for his age (he only looked like
he was in elementary). i guess trance is even more universal than i
thought! ;o) the dj site was really tastefully trippy: was it a mushroom
or a flying saucer? i never figured it out (wasnt in the condition of
thinking...). something really weird was the mist in the morning. the
sun started shining at like 10 am or something! it was just another
ingredient that demonstrated how the gods wanted every little particular
to make the atmosphere get to our souls.
the chill-out was crazy: people just laying and chilling to ambient,
toking and tripping out to nature and music. it was very very pleasing
to see people from all over the globe - japan, taiwan, italy, england,
holland, germany, spain, states.....and even korea !! (thats me!) another
thing that stays in my mind is the smiles on the police officers' faces
at the entrance of the party. why were they so happy? we'll definitely
be there next summer too, before going to solipse in hungary. and this
will all lead to southafrica2000, to which i'm really looking forward
to. the whole world will hear us thumping on the ground on new years
eve. much love to all those who keep this beautiful thing called trance
alive, and make it evolve as time goes by. i dont think there's any
other institution (lets call it that) in which prejudice and human flaws
are totally absent - they are just dissolved by the music!

Hi all ! Back from Boom, here's a brief review from my point of view.
I'll concentrate on the actual party bits, as there is simply too much
to tell .. I'm not sure if it's so wise to recount it all right away,
but anyhow here goes : Arriving in the forest thursday evening, it all
felt right immediately. The camping was already lively, and most of the
decorations had been put up. We hurried in putting up our tent, and had
a look around. Mainfloor was even more amazingly setup this year than
last (and that was no little feat to accomplish, believe me!). There were
loads of beautiful fluoroworms, a brilliant cobweb of fluorostring, some
utterly amazing, unique backdrops, and a circle of speakers surrounding
the dancearea. The "stage" was a giant fluoro UFO, and there were some
5-6 projection screens, one big and several smaller ones. Walking in there
with blacklights on was an amazing feeling of it's own, and my expectations
rose even more.. Anyhow, on to the next day for the 604 meetup, which
was imo very nice and successful. The heat and numerous charas rounds
earlier on rendered me more or less incapable of sensible communication,
but it was very nice to meet you all anyhow, and connect some faces to
the names =) I think at least some 15 people showed up or so, a great
start of the festival! That evening was the one I expected to be less
interesting musically, but fortunately I was proven wrong as the surprise
DJ who was to replace Antaro (due to back problems :/) really amazed me.
After several okay sets earlier, with decent music, but nothing special
imo, Ali Baba took control of the Ufo. Ali Baba, a 15 year old DJ talent
grown up in Goa, rocked the whole dancefloor with a blending morning set
from around 6 to 9.. He was totally into it, and played stormers from
Posford, Oforia, X-Dream... All in all what everyone wanted it seemed,
because the spirit was high =) I didn't catch the rest of the day as I
was too tired at that point, and wanted to save a little energy for later
on. During that night I had again been impressed with the mainarea setup,
as the projection screen system was great. The bigger screen showed intense
psychedelic streams from Photon (danes), which really suited the music
for the most of the time. The smaller ones ran a slideshow with lots of
nice mood setting pictures, and Thew had one of those small ones for his
very nice psychedelic video footage mix (should have been on a larger
screen though). Day two had a lineup of Pleiadians, Koxbox + DJ's of which
Frank E. had the honor of doing the 6-9 morning piece. I had a great time
on the dancefloor most of the time, but highlights were the aforementioned
ones.. Pleiadians did a nice set, quite different from what you hear on
IFO, sound was much more "live" in feeling, but worked very well indeed.
Koxbox, playing at 5 in the morning, just before sunrise time, was close
to perfect. The almost scary graphics, along with intense energy from
the Ufo and the massive vibe on the "floor" made it an unforgettable experience
indeed. I've heard sets with them before, but not in such a perfect setting
and with so good sound. Their magic worked, and set it all up for Frank
E. to finish off. I didn't stay through his whole set, but from what I
heard he played very wicked & intense music. On to the final day, the
lineup promised a lot, including Matt Boom, Ollie Wisdom as DJ & Spacetribe
Live, Psychopod and Max (of Etnica) ++. I heard some of Matt's set, and
it was quite nice and energetic, but imo nothing very special (might have
something to do with the company he was in down there, I do believe I'm
spoilt now...). It worked well anyway, and led up to Psychopod's performance.
Musically that set was even better than Koxbox, and all in all a truly
terrific nighttime experience. Their classics nicely woven with newer
material, flow was very good all the way. >From there Ollie carried the
party through the night (didn't catch the difference from his liveact
& dj set, but it was all very well pulled off), leading up to Max & sunrise
time. (Ok, this is the part words can't describe well enough, but I'll
do a desperate attempt.. ) >From the moment he took the controls to the
moment he left the Ufo, Max had us all in a tight grip of stunning, mindblowing,
enlightening and driving trance.. I've yet to experience a more energetic
DJ both musically and performancewise. The Italian simply played absolutely
blinding tracks, more new ones than released ones, and all of them full
on stompers. The dance went from wild to ecstatic and people were having
a marvellous experience. Max himself had a great time it seemed, he danced
and sent out so much great energy it was even more impressive than an
X-Dream set =) (It's the first time ever I see a DJ dancing that wildly,
and even mimicking the samples of the tracks he's playing ;) Oh well,
even good things have an end, but not Boom it seemed =) Following Max's
extraordinary performance was Avigal from Israel, and he followed very
well up with more uplifting, rocking tunes, not in the same league as
Max, but still good. After some 3-4 hours, things were supposed to end,
but someone said they'd decided to continue until 16.00 that day ! (Keep
in mind that nights party started at 20.00, and before that we had two
full days =) Dancefloor still going strong, another (so far unidentified)
DJ continued until well after 16.00.. When the music stopped, nobody wanted
to leave, and everyone started shouting and applauding. Soon after one
of the "hits" of the night, Stranded rmx by Delta, again boomed from the
speakers, and now almost everyone who'd been sitting around, too tired
to dance, joined in for the final burst... And of course more applause
followed, leading to the second extra track, (I believe it was "Travelling
at the speed of thought" another Delta 12" on BRR) and then .. end.. During
those days I came to appreciate that collective dancefloor feeling so
much, it'll now be very hard to go back to daily life again.. All those
tranced out, smiling, energetic people made Boom98 an experience for life.
Great feeling to dance with so many full on people in that magical surrounding,
nothing quite like it at all, it is the most powerful party experience
I've ever had (topping Boom97 by far ..). It was also great to dance with
all the 604 people finally, a shame I was so engulfed in the dance I had
little time for conversation.. Hugs to everyone anyway, I'm sure we had
communication on a different level going on ! ;) Other bits I shouldn't
forget was the excellent chillout area (only a bit too close to the mainfloor),
the great fleamarket, and the overall excellent vibe at the site. Also
the very relaxed security (this was as Jason C said it; a real T.A.Z.)
helped create a good atmosphere. The kindergarden was a great source of
good energy too, they even pulled off "The worlds first ever kid rave",
and the kids handed out handwritten fliers =) This was simply an out of
the ordinary huge experience for me, a big thank you all for the moments
shared down there !
Denis
